Title tag length in 2026: exact pixel limits
Measured 2026-07-06. Free to check, nothing uploaded.
How long should a title tag be in 2026? Keep it under about 600 pixels on desktop and 560 pixels on mobile, measured in Arial at Google's render size. That is roughly 50 to 60 characters, but Google decides the cut on rendered width, not character count, so measure the pixels. Anything past the budget is replaced with an ellipsis.

The measured 2026 title budgets
These are the pixel budgets realserp measures against. They are the same numbers the simulator and the title checker use, and they match the widely used reference simulators. The character equivalents are approximate.
| Device | Pixel budget | ≈ Characters | Render font |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop | 600px | 50–60 | Arial bold 20px |
| Mobile | 560px | 45–55 | Arial bold 20px |
Why pixels, not characters
A character counter treats every character as equal, but Google renders the title in a real font where letters have different widths. A title of 60 narrow characters can fit where 55 wide characters would not. That is why two titles with the same character count can truncate in different places, and why the pixel reading is the one to trust. The SERP pixel widths reference explains the render fonts and how the budgets were measured.
How to fix a title that is getting cut
- Measure the real width. Paste the title into the title tag checker and read its pixel width for desktop and mobile, not just its character count.
- Front-load the useful words. Put the terms a searcher scans for in the first 500 pixels, before any truncation point, so the important part survives the cut.
- Trim the least useful words. Cut filler and long brand suffixes. Shorten a pipe-and-brand tail, or drop it, if it pushes the title past the budget.
- Re-measure until it fits. Check the width again after each edit until the verdict reads fits on the device you care most about.
A fitted title is necessary, not sufficient
Even a perfectly sized title can be replaced. Google rewrites a large share of titles, often swapping in an on-page heading it judges a better match for the query. Write a clear, descriptive title that fits the budget, then treat the SERP as the final say. You can preview the whole result, favicon and description included, in the SERP simulator.
Common questions
How long should a title tag be in 2026?
Keep it under about 600 pixels on desktop and 560 pixels on mobile, measured in Arial at Google's render size. That is roughly 50 to 60 characters, but Google cuts on width, so measuring the pixels is more reliable than counting characters.
How many characters is 600 pixels?
About 50 to 60 characters for typical English text, because the average Arial character at Google's title size is near 10 to 11 pixels wide. Wide letters like W and M push you over sooner, and narrow letters like i and l let you fit more.
Does the title limit differ on mobile?
Slightly. A single-line mobile title budget is around 560 pixels, but mobile often wraps a long title to a second line instead of cutting it. Treat the mobile pixel budget as a conservative single-line guide.
Will Google keep my title if it fits?
Not always. Google rewrites a large share of titles regardless of length, often using an on-page heading instead. Fitting the pixel budget makes your written title eligible to appear; it does not guarantee it.
